Integrated Training, Mental Health and a Mile of Swings

A couple of random thoughts for today. In no particular order: 1st- Hylete Fitpro Nominations. You may or may not have noticed those slinky black trousers I wear every day in work (they’re not the same pair every day! I do have several……..) Well they’re from a company called Hylete who make some really really nice training clothes. And by nice, I’m not talking about the look of them, I’m no fashionista, but the feel while moving, training and being awesome. And the durabilit

6 Important Points on Mental Health

So last night I attended the Rehabcare HOPS pub quiz. The name HOPS stands for “Healing Opportunities and Peer Support” It’s a place dedicated to helping people recover from mental illness with the ultimate goal of helping the service users become independent, self sufficient and able to become fully functional members of the community. In the time I’ve worked with the centre, both as a volunteer and also as a contractor providing services, I’ve seen several people from the c

4 Tips To Ensure a Great Performance

Saturday is fast approaching and with it comes the 1 Mile Kettlebell Swing Challenge. Last Saturday I was very lucky to witness 5 of my athletes take the platform at the Irish Kettlebell Lifting championships. One of whom had never been involved in competitive sport and another who is dealing with a chronic injury. Every one of them looked and behaved in a very professional manner and every one of them hit personal bests. The two events are making me think about the mental si

Wild Geese, Mental Health, RehabCare and Walking Kettlebell Swings – An Interview

We are now less than a week away from the 1 Mile Walking Kettlebell Swing challenge to raise much needed funds for the charity I work closely with, Rehab Care, specifically their HOPS centre. RehabCare HOPS is two minutes away from our studio in Westland Square. The centre deals with mental health. I’ve been working with the centre in an ever closer capacity over the last couple of years. Some of the regulars in and out of Wild Geese may have met some of the Rehab guys in p

1 Mile of Walking Kettlebell Swings – Are you up for a Challenge?

1 Mile of Walking Swings – could you do it? Click the image to download the pdf poster 1 Mile is 1600 meters. (1609.344 to be precise) An average stride length is 0.762 metres This means that it takes approx 2112 steps to cover a mile. The American College of Sports Medicine reports that there are approximately 2,000 steps in one mile (thanks to livestrong.com for that tidbit) Now imagine swinging a kettlebell each and every time you take a step. That’s a total of 2000 swings

My Mad Methods – Spreading the word

This is quick post to pass on a few updates for you all. My Mad Methods magazine creator, Mark De Grass, has sent out a message asking for you all to support our crazy challenge this week end. I’m sure by now you’ve heard that myself and a few of my guys will be performing 1 mile of walking kettlebell swings for RehabCare HOPS, well word has spread far and wide. We now have over €1500 in the kitty, but are looking to raise another €2500. Many of you have sponsor cards, I ho

Personal Responsibility and Giving Something Back

“We shouldn’t rely on Politicians, we each should take some personal responsibility” This was a quote on a billboard advertising the Sunday Times. I spotted it driving into the gym this morning and it set my mind racing. Those last two words in the sentence have dropped so far out of fashion these last few years it’s no wonder the western world is in the trouble it is. Those two words are the answer you’ve been looking for to solve all your problems. Those two words are the

1 Mile Walking Kettlebell Swings – Feb 26th

Wild Geese and RehabCare have been working together for several months now, their clients have been coming to us for Self Defence courses and fitness training. Their budget was cutback this year, so we’ve volunteered to aid in their fundraising efforts. Please watch this video, then dig deep into your pockets and help us help those who need it: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sH28uuH4QY&fs=1&hl=en_GB] The challenge we are undertaking, while physical, will be extreme
