HRV and the Wild Geese Training Methods

Over the last couple of days I was in the company of a group of trainers listening to Joel Jamieson talk about his Bioforce HRV system. With Joel Jameison of 8WeeksOut.com and Bioforce HRV Now, I’m still processing this info, i tend to take my time with things like this, not really talking too much about things until I’ve had some practical experience using the tool and/or techniques. But, after reading Joel’s book, going through his online video course, listening to him talk

1 Piece of Kit, Unlimited Awesome Potential.

I was supposed to write you an awesome blog post for today, I had planned to get it done this morning before the day kicked off with training people, but Son #1 had other ideas. And when it comes to answering your questions on strength, fitness, awesomeness and the like or answering his question on why worms have that fat bit in the middle. Well he wins! So, the fat bit on an earthworm is called the Clitellum and it’s where the worm keeps its eggs. Cool eh? But after we spe

Develop Cat Like Agility with Animal Movements

Too many attend gyms, lift weights, get stronger and leaner and in doing so become locked into the movement patterns they train the most. It’s not just the gym population but runners, cyclists and even many martial artists. People become locked into the movements that they train in the gym at the expense of all other natural movements. Hence we have cyclists who can’t run or jump. We’ve Judo/Jiu Jitsu players who walk around hunched over, we have strength athletes that can’t

Short Circuit – Fast fat loss & intense conditioning

Circuit training has been around for as long as the hills. It’s a favourite method of training here at Wild Geese. Beyonce - Built by circuit training and hill sprints The format is simple, lay out a series of exercises and go from one to the next until all have been completed for the desired reps / time. Rinse and repeat. Go to any gym and you’ll probably see something like this going on. Although in most gyms it’s usually run by an aerobics instructor…… For an athlete look

    Putting The Boot In

I WISH the military looked like this I have been known, on many occasions to stand and take the piss out of these “military” bootcamp classes that are all the rage right now. I find the marketing and hype far outstrips the actual quality of training, and as for any resemblance to actual military training…. Lets not even go there! So I find it slightly embarrassing to announce that I will be running a Bootcamp of my own. I’m not embarrassed by the training on offer, or the f

    Strength Training for Fight Training

Recently some of the Wild Geese Kickboxers have been coming to me asking for advice on getting stronger. And I have to admit, I’m delighted. Right from its inception, Wild Geese have been offering conditioning training for its fighters. But various coaches are a little set in their ways and the lads often think that what they do in class is enough. The coaches I can understand. They’ve done what they’ve done for years and have gotten great results, why change? Simply since th

Last Night’s Kettlebell Class, Level 2 Kettlebell Workshop and a New eBook

Lots happening here at WG HQ. Don’t really know where to begin. So lets start with last night’s Kettlebell Fitness class and work backwards…. The gang last night all came in fresh from whatever they got up to over Paddy’s day. I informed them that today will be snatch day. Due to my own shoulder injury, I’ve avoided snatching for the last couple of weeks, so I haven’t had my class doing it either. That was all about to change. I decided to do a short “RKC” style snatch test.

Why use Kettlebells for Brute Strength and Toughness?

Here’s a guest post from the Under Ground Strength Coach, Zach Evan-Esh. Zach has built a reputation for producing strong, athletic and enduring athletes using no bull training methods. Here he is talking about Kettlebells, and he describes a few training methods that members of the Wild Geese Kettlebell Fitness group are already familiar with. Read and enjoy ———————————————————————————————————————————— I’m here in Louisville, and on the way out here I stopped through Ohio

Sweep the leg. Do you have a problem with that?

It’s on TV now, I’m sat here mucking around online while the missus is sat flicking through TV channels, guess what she found, hang on it’s the final…….. ……………Go on Danny Laruso!! That’s right, The Karate Kid! Anyway back to the point, 21 years ago I was sat on the sofa, aged 10 watching this same film. Within the month I was training. I had joined the local karate school (St Martins Jnr Karate Club, under Sensei Jack Parker) and finally started something. This had a major ef

    Mental Toughness

There is a quote in Enter the kettlebell by Federal counter-terrorist operator saying “Kettlebell Training…the closest thing you can get to a fight without throwing a punch”. I was just out in by back garden, barefoot in a singlet starting my training today. This consisted of military press ladders followed by EDT swings with the 32kg bell. Then came the wind, rain and hail. As if heavy swings for 15 minutes aren’t tough enough, the weather comes in making it cold, miserable,

Kettlebells, probably the most effecient workout you can do

Many of you know I’m a big fan of the kettlbell for strength and conditioning training. I’ve spoken about them in previous posts and will doubtless post about them again. If you’ve never tried them you have three options: Option 1 – Keep your head in the sand and keep doing what you’ve always done and enjoy the never ending plateaus you’ll endure. Option 2 – Call/email us and come in for some personal training with the Kettlebell and associated exercises or Option 3 – Learn i

    Grease the Groove Protocol

Here’s a simple method of improving a skill set that I got from Pavels “The Naked Warrior”, he calls it Grease the Groove. What it is, in a nutshell, is a method of High Frequency Training. It calls for a single set of an exercise at intervals throughout the day. Each set should stop short of failure, in other words if you can’t perform another perfect rep, don’t even try. You will aim to get as many sets done during the day as comfortable, starting maybe with 2, building to

Strength Training in Martial Arts pt 2

So we all agree, strength training in martial arts has always been around in some form or another, and we also take for granted that any boxer or UFC fighter will be doing some form of strength work. So how do you apply it to your training schedule? You can train with or without equipment, in a gym, your dojo or your home, on your own or with a partner/group. So you’ve opted for no equipment Great choice, as you can do this anywhere anytime. But how do you put together an eff

    Strength Training in Martial Arts

Happy New Year to you all, I’ve been a bit slow off the mark getting back into the swing of things in 2008, but I’ve got one more Xmas party to attend and thats it, back into good hard training. The subject of strength training has been debated long and hard in the martial arts world for a number of years. Many instructors simply refuse to accept that it is of any use at all. How they justify this is usually weak cop outs like: “It slows you down” “Strength doesn’t matter if

    Wild Geese Kettlebells

At the risk of sounding like I’m jumping on the Kettlebell bandwagon, I think they are great pieces of kit. If you don’t know anything about them, here’s a the brief: Shape: A cannonball with a thick handle Weight: You choose, they go up in 4kg increments, however the 16, 24 & 32kg are the most popular. What do you do: Train!! Now while their detractors will tell you that there’s very little you can do with a KB that you can’t do with a Dumbbell, I’ll agree with them, but the
